I have come across so many schools over the years where PR has been tagged onto an existing member of staff’s to-do list. Often, the head’s PA is the chosen one. Aside from their hugely busy role, they are tasked with putting together a newsletter and getting the attention of the press.
Sometimes, that’s a system that has been in place and worked for years. That is great – getting regular positive press often comes down to relationships and if that connection has been made between school and newspaper, it’ll work. But, people leave and those links disappear – especially in this age of sadly huge turnover of staff within the press.
And, with dwindling team members – in schools and the press – PR is often the thing that stays on that to-do list, constantly being pushed further and further down the priorities.
That is where I step in. As a journalist, I spend my working days searching for positive news stories, writing them in the way editors want – I was one of them for many years – and sharing them with my extensive contact list. As a result, I secure positive publicity for my client schools week in and week out.
They effectively have their very own journalist as part of their extended team, but one who is working for them – and not the press – and so is putting their interests front and centre, while having the know-how to still make the headlines.
