“Journalism still f***ing matters!”
Having watched The Devil Wears Prada 2 this week, the one thing that stuck with me was this powerful quote by the film’s Andy Sachs. On discovering – via text – that she and her journalism colleagues were losing their jobs, she stands at an aptly-timed awards ceremony and proudly makes the declaration.
At a time when local newspapers have “AI assisted” reporters and we are uncertain who and what we can believe online, the film has reminded us (not that some of us needed reminding!) of the very fact that old-school, traditional journalism still very much matters.
My business is built on my strong journalism roots. The fact I pounded the streets as a cub reporter on my local newspaper until I could help fill the next day’s newspaper means I can easily help my clients to find a newsworthy hook to hang their news on.
Today, I use those hard-earned skills and long-held contacts to secure my clients the best publicity – yes, online, but also in the beautifully printed pages of their local paper.
Of course, times are changing and we move with them, but, for now at least, “journalism still f***ing matters” to me and my clients.
For my school clients, week in and week out, I am getting their names into their local communities, building and maintaining their reputations, making sure they get bums on seats each year. Because, as we know, schools need children to bring in the money that keeps the establishments surviving and thriving.
